Referral

GP referrals

All referrals will need to be made via the e-referral system. Moorfields Eye Hospital will not accept any GP referrals made outside of this system. An agreed process will be in place to ensure that there is no delay processing urgent and two week wait referrals.

In line with national Department of Health priorities, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is committed to receiving primary care referrals via NHS e-Referral Service (ERS).

We ask all GPs referring to Moorfield Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to use NHS e-Referral Service wherever possible.

Optometrists referrals

Community optometrists can now send referrals directly to a new single point of access, which routes them to the patient’s preferred hospital for triage and management. This new pathway will improve referral processing and reduce patient journey time from point of referral to hospital appointment. The Single Point of Access facilitates service innovations including centralised triaging, the launch of an advice and guidance service, the provision of targeted optometrist education and referral feedback, and dynamic digital modelling, to improve access to hospital resources.

Self-referring to Moorfields Private

You can book appointments directly with Moorfields Private by contacting their dedicated new patient team on 0800 328 3421.

You will be taken through the booking process and explained how to prepare and what to expect at your appointment.

18 weeks referral to treatment (RTT) rules – your rights

In order to give you the best care possible, it is important that you attend your appointments with us. If you are not able to do so or no longer require your appointment, it is important that you let us know as soon as possible. This way we can ensure that the appointment can be offered to another patient in need of care.

We are committed to treating all our patients within 18 weeks. This is part of the NHS Constitution and your legal right.

The NHS Constitution gives you the right to access consultant led services within a maximum of 18 weeks from referral or, if this is not possible, for the NHS to take all reasonable steps to offer you a range of suitable providers.

The waiting time is calculated from the date we receive your referral, to the date you either receive treatment or a decision is made that you do not require treatment. This timescale is referred to as 'referral to treatment' (RTT). Our patient access policy outlines how we manage the process between referral to our services and the first treatment or discharge. The maximum waiting times are detailed in the NHS Constitution handbook which covers the whole of the NHS in England.

The only services not covered by the 18 weeks rule at Moorfields Eye Hospital are those that are not consultant led. If you are referred into a service where your care is not overseen by a consultant, the 18 week target does not apply.
