Aftercare

You will be provided with comprehensive aftercare instructions following your procedure. Ensure that you follow these thoroughly and if you have any questions ask a member of the team before you leave the hospital.

Recovering from eye surgery requires care and caution to ensure a smooth healing process. Closely following your consultants post-operative instructions is fundamental for safe healing and to avoid potential complications. The recovery process typically involves a regimen of medications, activity limitations, scheduled follow-up appointments, and monitoring for any concerning symptoms.

Here are essential steps to take during your recovery:

  • Follow medication instructions

Use the prescribed antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and any other eye drops as directed by your consultant. Consistency is key; do not skip doses or alter the frequency, even if there's an improvement in your eye's condition.

  • Protect your eye while sleeping

Wear an eye shield or patch during sleep to safeguard your eye from inadvertent rubbing or pressure, aiding in the healing process.

  • Avoid touching your eye

Minimise rubbing, pressing, or touching the eye area, even if experiencing itchiness. Opt for a cool compress if itching persists, as it can provide relief without disrupting the healing process.

  • Apply cool compresses

Place cool compresses on closed eyelids for 10-15 minutes multiple times daily to alleviate swelling, redness, and discomfort post-surgery.

  • Limit screen time and physical strain

Reduce screen time on electronic devices and take regular breaks to rest your eyes. Avoid strenuous activities and bending over, which may elevate intraocular pressure.

  • Attend follow-up appointments

Keep all scheduled follow-up visits with your consultant, nurses and optometrists to ensure close monitoring of your recovery progress and to address any concerns promptly.

  • Report Concerning Symptoms

Seek medical assistance, contacting Moorfields direct or A&E, immediately if you experience worsening pain, changes in vision, excessive discharge or watering from the eye, or escalating redness/swelling.

Following these guidelines and maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider, you can facilitate a successful recovery from eye surgery.
