Trust Board

The board of directors holds overall accountability for the organisation and is responsible for strategic direction and the high-level allocation of resources. It delegates decision-making for the operational running of the trust to the chief executive.

Laura Wade-Gery, chair

Laura Wade Gery

Laura Wade-Gery joined the Board as chair on 1 February 2023, after serving as a non-executive director on the NHS England board. Previously Laura was chair of the NHS Digital Board. 

Laura has over 20 years’ business experience having worked for several large businesses, including Marks and Spencer Group and Tesco. She joined Marks and Spencer Group in 2011 and was Executive Director, Multi-Channel, responsible for stores and online until 2016. She was Chief Executive Officer of Tesco.com from 2003 to 2011, and previously held several senior roles at Tesco, having joined them in 1997.

Laura is currently a Non-Executive Director of British Land PLC and of Legal and General Group. She is a trustee of Britten Pears Arts. She was an advisor to the Government Digital Service from 2012 to 2016 and a Non-Executive Director of the John Lewis Partnership from 2017 to April 2021.

Dr Martin Kuper, chief executive

Dr Marin Kuper

Martin took up the position of chief executive at Moorfields in September 2021. An anaesthetist by training, he was the former deputy chief executive for transformation and chief medical officer at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. Martin has a wealth of expertise including over 10 years of board experience as medical director in foundation and non-foundation trusts in London.

Asif Bhatti, non-executive director and chair of audit & risk committee

Asif Bhatti

Asif joined us as a non-executive director in May 2022. He is a chartered accountant and is currently the group director of risk and audit at the Compass Group plc. Over the last 20 years, he has held senior finance roles in a broad range of companies and industries including the John Lewis Partnership, chaired Gloucester City Homes and has held non-executive roles with the East Thames Housing Association and Global Partners & Associates, a political change consultancy. Asif brings a deep understanding of finance, transformational change, IT and risk.

Professor Andrew Dick, non-executive director

Andrew Dick

Andrew took up position as director of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology in September 2016. He is a clinician scientist and surgeon, also based at University of Bristol, with a main interest in how our immune system both protects and damages tissues in a variety of diseases, including age-related macular degeneration and uveitis. Andrew is the joint senior responsible officer (SRO) for Oriel.

Nick Hardie, non-executive director and chair of finance & performance committee

Nick Hardie

Nick joined the trust in January 2016. His career has included senior treasury and financial management roles for a number of FTSE companies including Marks and Spencer and Hammerson, a property development and investment company with a £9bn portfolio. Nick is also a non-executive director of the Devon and Cornwall Housing Group.

David Hills, non-executive director and co-chair of major projects & digital committee

David Hills

David joined the trust in April 2017 and is an experienced construction and project delivery professional whose career over 40 years.  He has held senior and board level roles for a number of FTSE companies, including Mouchel and Laing O’ Rourke, as well as working extensively with the public sector in senior project and programme delivery roles. David was a regional Board Member of Sport England in the run up to London 2012 and has extensive overseas experience too, notably India and the Middle East.  He is currently director of programme delivery for the University of Cambridge.

Richard Holmes, non-executive director and chair of discovery & commercial committee

Richard Holmes

Richard held senior roles at Specsavers for over ten years, as global marketing director and joint chief executive officer (UK). Over this period the group increased its UK market share from 30% to 50% and became the market leader in Scandinavia. Richard also held a number of senior marketing and commercial roles at Boots and Unilever. Richard is holds non-executive director roles at Lok’N Store Plc and First Contact Healthcare and is vice chair of his local Citizens Advice organisation.

Michael Marsh, non-executive director and chair of quality & safety committee

Michael Marsh

Dr Michael Marsh joined the Board as a non-executive director in November 2024, bringing with him a wealth of experience in the healthcare sector. Michael qualified at Guy’s Hospital Medical School. He then undertook postgraduate training in paediatrics in Poole, Oxford and London. Most of his paediatric training was at the Evelina Children’s Hospital and at Guy’s Hospital and spending three years in research in the Newborn Respiratory Unit at St. Thomas’ Hospital. Dr Marsh was a director of paediatric intensive care for nine years before becoming clinical director of paediatrics and then divisional director of Women and Children’s Services.

Michael became medical director for specialised commissioning for NHS England in the London Region whilst continuing his clinical work in paediatric intensive care until the end of 2016. In 2016 he was appointed as a Non-Executive Director at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust, a post he held until 2019 when he joined the Council of the General Medical Council. In 2019 he took up the post of Regional Medical Director and Chief Clinical Information Officer for NHS England in the South West Region.

Adrian Morris, vice-chair and senior independent director

Adrian Morris

Adrian joined Moorfields in March 2021. Adrian is the General Counsel of Haleon PLC (a FTSE100 Consumer Health company), having joined in August 2024, where his responsibilities include legal, compliance, regulatory, corporate governance and security. Prior to his current role, he was General Counsel of Tesco PLC for almost 12 years and held senior roles in BP, Centrica and British Gas. 

Aaron Rajan, non-executive director, chair of people & culture committee and co-chair of major projects & digital committee

Aaron Rajan headshot

Aaron joined Moorfields in March 2023, and has held senior roles across Unilever most recently as Chief Information and Digital Officer for North America and Global Vice President for Technology and Digital. Aaron is a keen advocate for the ethical use of technology to unleash human potential and benefit society, an advisory member of the Royal Horticultural Society and a graduate of Imperial College London. Aaron is also the product of parents who devoted their lives to serving the NHS and advancing medical research.

Sheila Adam, chief nurse

Sheila Adam

With a wealth of executive, leadership and research experience, Sheila joined Moorfields as chief nurse in April 2022. Prior to this, Sheila worked for NHS England and NHS Improvement, where she was an intensive support improvement director, delivering executive leadership support to Trusts across the NHS. She was chief nurse and director of governance at Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust from 2013 to 2018 and, prior to this, deputy chief nurse and acting chief nurse at University College London NHS Foundation Trust. With an extensive background in critical care nursing, Sheila believes strongly in the importance of multi-professional team working to deliver high quality care as well as engaging and co-creating with patients and their families to improve their experience. Sheila will play a key role in driving forwards strategic projects like Oriel, our new centre for excellence in eye care, research, and education.

Jon Spencer, chief operating officer 

Jon Spencer

Jon joined us in February 2021. Prior to this Jon served as deputy chief operating officer at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust where he was involved in a number of high profile projects, including leading the hospital’s response to Covid-19 and overseeing major programmes of work in pharmacy, imaging and genomics. He has also provided divisional level management to a number of clinical services at both the Marsden and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

Sue Steen, chief people officer

Sue joined the trust in October 2024. Prior to joining Moorfields, Sue was chief people officer at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.

Sue has over 30 years’ experience of working in the public and not for profit sector. Sue started her career as a graduate trainee in local government with Coventry City Council, and gained vital skills and a wealth of experience and expertise in roles along the way, such as director of corporate services at the National Crime Agency, director of human resources and governance at South Western Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust as well as working overseas in New Zealand as Deputy Chief Executive People at St John.

Sue has an impressive HR and organisational development background and is passionate about employee engagement, building high performing teams, and creating positive working environments where people can thrive, and everyone has a voice. She is motivated by working in public and health related services that make a difference in people’s lives.

Louisa Wickham, medical director and interim director of discovery

Louisa Wickham

Louisa became medical director in January 2021. She joined Moorfields as a consultant in vitreoretinal surgery and medical retina. Her interest in clinical leadership stems from her time as a trainee, developing a Leadership Fellow for the Health Foundation and as a European Leadership Fellow at INSEAD. She works with the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and Royal Society of Medicine to promote clinical leadership for doctors at all stages of their training.

Justin Betts, acting chief finance officer

Justin joined Moorfields in 2019 as deputy chief finance officer and became acting chief finance officer in November 2024. 

Originally a qualified radiographer Justin transfer to work in the finance profession working in a number of audit and private practice firms before moving to work in the NHS pairing his clinical experience with his accountancy qualification.

Since that time Justin has worked in some of the largest and nationally recognised organisations across the country in a range of specialist, community and general acute trust settings with provider and commissioner experience.

Non voting executive directors

Six further directors sit on the board of directors but do not have voting rights.

Elena Bechberger, director of strategy and partnerships

Elena Bechberger, director of strategy and partnerships

Elena joined the trust in August 2024. Prior to this, Elena was national programme director for the Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) programme, for NHS England – leading their high volume low complexity (HVLC) and elective hubs programme.

Elena has a wealth of experience and a proven track record in policy, strategy, and transformation – both within the NHS and wider public sector.

As former director for acute and planned care transformation with the South West London Health and Care Partnership and later director for London’s integrated care systems (ICS) network, Elena is adept at working with patients, staff and system partners to develop strategy, and achieving better life outcomes for patients.

Kieran McDaid, director of capital, estates and major projects

Kieran was appointed to the board in June 2018 and is an experienced construction and project management professional having delivered a large number of construction projects in both academic and clinical settings. Kieran is a fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS) and holds an MBA from the University of Nottingham. Kieran previously held the position of estates director at University College London    Hospitals (UCLH) where he led and delivered significant projects, such as the Proton Beam Therapy Centre, Macmillan Cancer Centre and Eastman Dental Hospital.

Nick Roberts, chief information officer

Nick Roberts

Nick was appointed to the board in June 2020 as Moorfields’ chief information officer. Nick joined Moorfields from UCLH where he was the director of digital services. Nick has considerable experience and knowledge of clinical technical systems, major international research initiatives and system partnerships. Nick was responsible for the delivery of the EPIC health records system and technology supporting international research initiatives such as the early lung cancer diagnosis programme and creation of EMAP, a virtualised research platform for big data.

Ian Tombleson, director of quality and safety

Ian Tombleson

Ian joined Moorfields in November 2009. Ian has a scientific background in cancer research and worked subsequently in a number of NHS trusts. He also worked for the Health Service Ombudsman and the Care Quality Commission. Ian is responsible for customer services, risk and safety management and setting quality standards.

Professor Michèle Russell, director of education

Michèle Russell

Our education team is led by Professor Michèle Russell, joint director of education at Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. Michèle has a well-established reputation as a professor of clinical education and higher education (HE) policy with 18+ years senior strategic leadership experience HE, health, government, public and private sector consultancy. She brings expertise on curriculum design and innovation, professional and clinical education and a strong record of institutional, national and international project delivery. She has held PVC/director of education level roles at Russell Group universities, such as the LSE leading the transformation of assessment, and King’s College London, where she led on the consultation/revalidation of the MBBS and nursing/midwifery programmes. 

Peter Thomas, director of digital development

Peter Thomas headshot

Peter joined Moorfields in 2017 as a consultant paediatric ophthalmologist, and was appointed as Director of Digital Development in 2023 in addition to his role as Chief Clinical Information Officer (since 2021). He has a significant background in technology, beginning his career at IBM, completing a PhD in computational neuroscience at Cambridge in 2005, and developing a research interest in digital health and medical artificial intelligence alongside his clinical practice. He has been the trust’s lead for clinical informatics since 2021 and focusses on the digital transformation of clinical services as well as supporting the Trust’s broader IT and digital programmes. He has acted as clinical lead for eyecare at NHSx and is currently the digital/clinical lead for eyecare at NHS England.
