Frequently asked questions

How do I claim back expenses

  • There are two ways to claim back (be reimbursed) for your expenses (IF expenses are covered for your study)

  1. Cash via cashiers (see below)

  2. Bank transfer

Your study coordinator will advise you of the process and expenses covered for your child’s study. Keep your receipts and have them to hand when attending your appointments.

  • To receive cash reimbursement on the day – you will need to take a signed form down to cashiers on the ground floor – please note cashiers can close earlier than the research unit – ask our nurses about opening times and make a plan.

  • Or your study coordinator might take copies of your receipts to process a bank transfer.

  • It may be that you need to complete your journey before you have receipt for your travel – your study coordinator will advise what to do in this instance.

What is the role of my child’s local optometrist

It is important that your child continues to have regular check-ups with your own local optometrist (optician) during and after their research participation.

Should we bring lunch?

Your study coordinator will be able to tell you how long your child’s research visit will be. There are a number of popular places to eat near Moorfields Eye Hospital. There are also a variety of food and drink facilities on site at Moorfields City Road (scroll down to ‘food and drink’): https://www.moorfields.nhs.uk/locations/moorfields-city-road

If you plan to leave the hospital for lunch we may need to add in a longer lunch break. Please discuss your lunch plans with your study coordinator in advance, and receptionist or nurses on the day.

How do I keep my child’s other health care professionals informed about the research?

Tell us who is involved in your child’s care and we can share information with them as appropriate. For some (not all) studies, with your consent, the child’s GP will be sent a letter to tell them about your child’s research participation.

How do I avoid my child missing school?

Talk to your study coordinator about when would suit your child for their appointments. We will try our best to accommodate requests. We can provide letters for school, to obtain authorised absence as necessary.

What do we do about circumstances which make research treatments difficult or impossible to continue, for a length of time or at a certain time?

Please talk to you study nurse or coordinator. If we can understand your circumstances, we can give you advice on which actions to take. For example, holiday advice related to safe transport, storage, and / or directions for teachers.

I am worried about my child’s emotional wellbeing related to their eye or vision diagnosis, treatment (including research) and follow up. Who should I speak to?

Counselling services are available to all patients who attend Moorfields Eye Hospital. Referrals can be made by the research team. If you think your child needs to see a counsellor, have a chat with the doctor or nurse and they can make a referral: https://www.moorfields.nhs.uk/about-us/our-support-network/counsellors
