Failed school vision screening

The following information provides a guide for GPs on how to manage or make a referral for failed school vision screening in children.

  • Low risk pathology

    if the child has:

    Unilateral or bilateral reduced vision of no worse than 0.200 LogMAR (6/9.5 Snellen equivalent) in the weaker eye (s)

     

    Refer to local optometrist for GOS sight test

  • Low risk pathology

    • Any child under the age of 7 years with either no refractive error, or who, despite glasses wear for 12 weeks, has vision of less than 0.200 LogMAR in one or both eyes. 
    • Insufficient co-operation to assess vision, cover test, fundus or refraction
    • Child with learning difficulties or complex additional needs
    • Child with constant squint (manifest strabismus) or eye movement disorder
    • Child with known bilateral and sensorineural hearing deficit

     

    Refer to Hospital  or community children’s eye service

Referral information

If possible, attach photo of eye to e-referral

Always include:

  • Child’s date of birth
  • Address
  • Child’s social worker details (including Borough), if any
  • Parent/carer contact phone number and email
