We are delighted to announce that Moorfields Membership Council has appointed Professor Tim Briggs CBE as our interim chair.
Tim brings with him a wealth of experience as chair of the Federation of Specialist Hospitals and chair of the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance. He is an orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH), where he was medical director for 15 years.
Tim, who is a former president of the British Orthopaedic Association, is renowned for developing the Getting it Right First Time (GIRFT) programme methodology which he started in orthopaedics and has since been extended to 43 specialties including ophthalmology. In 2015 he was appointed national director for clinical quality and efficiency where he led the rollout of his GIRFT methodology, medical and cross-cutting specialities to help improve treatment and care across the NHS.
He is chair of the GIRFT programme and in 2022 he was appointed NHS England’s national director for clinical improvement and elective recovery. He has been involved at trust, system and regional level, involving the transformation of services, and resulting in improved outcomes and timely care for patients.
He was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2018 for services to the surgical profession.

I am hugely passionate about the NHS and have spent my career striving to ensure outstanding patient care remains at the heart of all decision making. I am looking forward to both meeting and working with as many of Moorfields’ teams as possible over the next six months.”

Tim will be interim chair for six months and he starts his role today, Thursday 10 April.
A recruitment process for the permanent chair role will commence imminently.
