#HelloMyNameIs... Ayman Gawish

We caught up with Ayman Gawish, pre-registration trainee pharmacy technician, apprentice.

Ayman has worked at Moorfields since November 2021 and completed his pharmacy assistant technical officer apprenticeship in May 2023.

This ongoing journey has expanded my knowledge and honed practical skills, aligning with Moorfield's unwavering commitment to patient care. Looking ahead, I am enthusiastic about this apprenticeship's opportunities and the positive impact I aspire to have.

Kindness is one of our values. What does this mean to you and how do you strive for it in your everyday working life? Can you give an example of how you have been kind?

On a few occasions, I have provided support to patients and nurses during my lunch break. For example, I prepared medications for transport patients to avoid them having to wait a long period of time. The pharmacist also kindly worked with me to check the medications. Both the patient and nurse were very happy – a small act of kindness goes a long way.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given and how has this helped you?

The best advice is simple but powerful – never give up. It helps me stay strong through all challenges in life.

How do you personally try and create a better work/life balance?

I prioritise good time management by creating monthly plans and setting clear priorities. Managing work, study, and family is vital. I spend an hour every day and at least three hours on weekends to study - particularly in the morning as this helps me to meet my assignment deadlines.

What makes you happy?

What makes me happy is being able to help people and make a positive change in their lives.

Excellence is one of our values. What does this mean to you and how do you strive for it in your everyday working life? Can you give an example?

To me, excellence is going above and beyond for patient care. I only work Monday to Fridays as the pharmacy is closed on the weekend, however there are Saturday clinics that run at Northwick Park. One Saturday, a patient needed an injection which is usually kept in the pharmacy, so I took the time to come in to work to supply this to the nurse so that the patient could receive their injection. I feel that I strive towards excellence in my everyday working life by going the extra mile.

Following this, I suggested the idea to the lead pharmacist for our satellite sites to keep injections as emergency stock in the clinics to ensure that patients can receive their treatment without any delays on weekends or during times when pharmacy is closed. This was approved and is currently working well.

When you’re not working what do you like to do?

I like to spend time with my family and friends. I also enjoy watching football and movies.

Do you have a pet? If so, please could you share a photo and a little bit about them? How long have you had this pet for?

I have two cats. Rosie is a Norwegian female cat around a year and a half old. She’s playful, very loving, and affectionate. I have had her since she was two months old. The second cat is called Casper, a two-year-old ragdoll male. I have had him for a year. Casper is very relaxed, and likes being petted by others.

In no more than two lines, what does working at Moorfields mean to you personally?

Working at Moorfields marks a new chapter, embracing a fresh start in the UK.

I'm proud to be part of a respected hospital where I can enhance my skills and continue building a successful career.

Ayman was nominated for a Moorfields' Star award in 2024 and was the first recipient of the chief executive's special recognition award.
