#HelloMyNameIs... George John

We caught up with George John, ophthalmic vision science assistant practitioner.

George’s role involves carrying out examinations and supporting patients. George was born in India and moved to England a few years ago. He was raised in Kerala and speaks Malayalam.

[My colleague's} Their willingness to collaborate, share knowledge, and provide emotional support during both challenging and rewarding moments has had a significant impact on me. Knowing that I am part of a team that genuinely cares about the well-being and success of one another motivates me to continually learn and improve.

Has there been one example or situation which has made you feel an additional sense of pride working at Moorfields and why?

I had the opportunity to assist a patient through a diagnostic test. The patients mobility was severly restricted which made it challenging for them to undergo routine diagnostic tests. We were able to modify the test setup to accommodate the patients needs.

We ensured that the equipment was accessible and comfortable for the patient, and we took the time to explain each step of the process clearly. I could see the patient's relief and appreciation for the effort we put into making it accessible. This situation deeply touched me because it highlighted the inclusive and patient-centered approach at Moorfields. It reinforced the value of individualised care and the importance of adapting our practices to meet the unique needs of each patient. This situation made me feel a great sense of pride in working at Moorfields Eye Hospital, where we strive to provide excellent care to all patients.

When you’re not working what do you like to do?

I try to stay active and maintain a healthy lifestyle. I like to go running, play badminton and practice yoga.

Spending quality time with loved ones and friends is also important to me. Whether it's going out for a meal, watching movies, or engaging in meaningful conversations, connecting with the people I care about brings me happiness and fulfilment.

What makes you happy?

Being present in the moment, practicing gratitude, and appreciating the small joys in life makes me happy.

What would your colleagues be surprised to discover about you?

I’m multilinguistic, I am fluent in five languages, Hindi, English, Urdu, Malayalam and Tamil.

Kindness is one of our values. What does this mean to you and how do you strive for it in your everyday working life? Can you give an example of how you have been kind?

Kindness to me means demonstrating empathy, compassion, and treating others with care and respect. I strive for kindness by actively listening, offering support, encouragement and being mindful of my words and actions. I always check in with my colleagues and acknowledge efforts made in the team.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given and how has this helped you?

To believe in myself and that I can do it. This advice has helped me overcome challenges and push me beyond my limits. Believing in myself has given me the confidence to take on new responsibilities and opportunities, even when they seem daunting at first. It has helped me trust my abilities and trust that I have what it takes to succeed.
