#HelloMyNameIs... Ana Sanchez

We caught up with Ana Sanchez, head of electro biomedical engineering (EBME).

Ana has worked at Moorfields since 2013, and her role involves management of medical devices across the trust and leading a team of clinical engineers.

[My team's] dedication and hard work inspire me to be a better leader. What I admire most is their teamwork and mutual support. In the technical field, sharing knowledge and experiences is crucial as each day presents new challenges, making passing on skills and knowledge essential.

Has there been one example or situation which has made you feel an additional sense of pride working at Moorfields and why?

In 2015, I had the honour of being part of a multi-disciplinary team that contributed to setting-up the Lions International Eye Centre, Korle Bu Hospital in Accra-Ghana. My role involved commissioning the medical devices. This experience was invaluable and unforgettable, giving me a deep appreciation for the incredible work we all do. The team was awarded the Moorfields Special Trustee’s award for innovation, Research or Education.

When you’re not working what do you like to do?

I love baking delicious treats; however, my husband and daughter are very health-conscious, so I usually end up eating most of the treats myself.

I also enjoy reading, my favourite genre is romance.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given and how has this helped you?

“What it’s like to be on the receiving end of you”, I learned this during leadership training, and it really resonated with me. Leadership is about connecting with others and understanding how you impact the people you are dealing with, so you can choose that impact wisely.

Working together means we collaborate with one another, with our patients and with other organisations. Can you give an example of a collaborative way you work?

Early engagement and collaboration are crucial. As a department, we have contributed to various projects trust-wide by advising, equipping, and installing all medical equipment at the diagnostic hubs in Stratford, Brent Cross 1 & 2, Hoxton and City Road. It is very rewarding to see patients coming into the hub, knowing that our efforts have contributed to making this happen.

How do you personally try and create a better work/life balance? Do you have any top tips to share with staff?

One tip I could share is to prioritise setting boundaries and self-care during your time off work. Taking time off to recharge benefits both you and your team by promoting a healthy work-life balance.
