Since 2007, Moorfields Eye Hospital has run ophthalmology services at Bedford Hospital. At present, we operate at both Bedford Hospital (South) and Bedford Hospital (North) sites, which are a mile apart from each other.
From September 2023, we will be moving our clinics at Bedford North to join the majority of our services at Bedford South, in the new purpose-built facilities. These will include new ‘pods’ in the Portacabin to add additional diagnostic lanes for medical retina and glaucoma patients, new intravitreal (inside the eye) injection suites, to increase capacity which will help to tackle local waiting lists and increased demand. There will also be a brand-new reception area and staffroom.
Clinics will be moved individually over the course of the month. Affected patients at Bedford North will be informed of the changes to their service either in-person, by phone call, letter or text, and can ring 01234 792290 if they have any concerns about the move.
Due to limited seating space we advise all patients to arrive no earlier than 15 minutes to their appointments, and to only bring family or friends if only they need care or support during their appointment times. This will allow us enough capacity to accommodate and manage patients attending for treatment smoother and timely. Accompanying relatives may drop patients off and pick up later or use the hospital restaurants as required.

Bedford Hospital South Wing has three main entrances to the hospital site, all of which have car parks:

There are several bus services from the local area that stop at Bedford Hospital, including the 1, 42, 44, 68, 53, 22A, C1, C10,C11, W1 and W2. For more details, visit the main operator websites, Stagecoach, Grant Palmer and Uno.
The Elstow Park and Ride bus service provides free parking and stops directly outside the hospital.
The closest stations are Bedford St. Johns ( a small, unmanned station) about five minutes’ walk away, and the main Bedford railway station, which is 10-15 minutes walk.
