Mr Luke Nicholson is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in retinal conditions at Moorfields and Moorfields Private Eye Hospitals. His primary area of interest is in retinal vein occlusion and diabetic retinopathy and he has published extensively in this field. Mr Nicholson has co-authored the recent Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) guidelines on retinal vein occlusion and is involved in several research projects in these conditions.

Are you involved in research projects?

I am currently continuing my research into ischaemia in retinal diseases, primarily focusing on retinal vein occlusion and diabetic retinopathy. I am leading studies using artificial intelligence in health care and assessing the safety and efficacy of digital clinics within the NHS. I am also involved in clinical trials on new interventions for diabetic macular oedema.

Why do patients come to see you?

Patients come to see me for care concerning the health of their retina and for cataracts usually in the setting of co-existing retinal pathology.
