Consultant interview - Mr Kamran Saha

Kamran Saha

Mr Saha is the founder and former Head of High Volume Cataract Surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the recipient of a Clinical Excellence Award for his work in cataract surgery. He is also nominated for a Patient Care Excellence Award.

What are your areas of expertise?

I am triple specialised in:

  • Complex and premium Cataract Surgery
  • Retinal diseases
  • Emergency Ophthalmology

However, these days I focus mainly on Cataract Surgery because I find that I can really help this patient group most, especially those with complex ocular and medical issues.

Why do patients come to see you?

The majority of my patients come through recommendations from patients and also from Moorfields Staff. In fact, I often operate on Moorfields staff or their family members. I like to think this is because I have a very low complication rate and take the time to really understand my patients to offer them a bespoke service, whether that means working closely with their optometrist, importing specialist lenses or performing additional treatments. I think this is imperative in achieving excellent outcomes.

Are you (or have you been) involved in research projects?

I previously worked with NHS Innovations developing a novel treatment for dry eyes which has since been used internationally. My current research work includes a joint project with Imperial College polymer scientists focused on developing a unique surgical device for cataract surgery. My research centres around refractive accuracy in cataract surgery.

Are you a teaching consultant?

In pre-Covid times, I regularly received surgeons from around the world to observe and learn from my surgical techniques. I am a faculty member on the renowned Moorfields Cataract Fellowship Programme and Clinical Supervisor for training eye surgeons. I lecture extensively, publish in medical journals, have authored book chapters and co-written a medical textbook.

Why refer to Moorfields Private?

We have some of the most advanced facilities for eye care and access to state-of-the-art equipment. Unlike many other centres, we are able to offer almost every type of eye care, thus providing a full service, all in-house. This ensures continuity and excellence for our patients.
