Consultant interview - Mr Amanjeet Sandhu

Sandhu, Amanjeet

Mr Amanjeet Sandhu is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Moorfields and Moorfields Private Eye Hospitals. He has a strong interest in the delivery of patient centred cataract care, in particular, for patients with both cataracts and glaucoma. Mr Sandhu provides a premium cataract surgery service for patients seeking less spectacle dependence following cataract surgery.

He has also developed a wide-ranging expertise in the medical, laser and surgical management of adult glaucoma, including minimally invasive and complex glaucoma surgery.

What are your areas of expertise?

  • Premium cataract surgery – focused on reducing spectacle dependence following surgery
  • Complex cataract surgery in patients with glaucoma
  • Glaucoma – including the medical, laser and surgical management of glaucoma in adults
  • Minimally invasive and complex glaucoma surgery

Cataract surgery remains the most frequent surgical procedure that I perform, and in the complex patient group that I manage, it continues to be a hugely effective treatment.

Are you involved in research projects?

I have an interest in glaucoma research that explores how the treatment of glaucoma improves patient’s quality of life. I undertook a glaucoma clinical trials research fellowship at Moorfields, during which I was fortunate to be involved in several studies that have influenced how we manage the medical, laser and surgical treatment of glaucoma today.

I have also co-authored a Cochrane systematic review on one of several minimally invasive glaucoma surgical procedures (also known as MIGS) that are a centrepiece of glaucoma surgical practice today.

Are you a teaching consultant?

One of the benefits of being a Consultant at Moorfields is an opportunity to train future ophthalmology specialists, both from the UK and abroad. I currently instruct UK ophthalmology trainees in cataract surgery as well as glaucoma clinical fellows in this sub-specialty.

Moorfields has also pioneered many aspects of the education and training of allied eye health professionals, including optometrists, in which I am involved.

Why do patients come to see you?

At Moorfields Private Eye Hospital, I am able to provide my expertise to cataract and glaucoma patients, both complex and less complex cases, often upon recommendation, but where patients are keen to be able to receive both their outpatient and surgical care directly from me. An important aspect of the care that I provide stems from the time that I give patients to ensure that the care they receive leads to the best possible outcome.

I am also able to provide private cataract patients with the benefit of a premium cataract surgery service, with access to multiple lens implant options such as multifocal lenses to reduce spectacle dependence.
