Miriam, Minihan

Miss Miriam Minihan is a highly specialised consultant ophthalmic surgeon with a special interest in cataract surgery and retinal problems working at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Moorfields Private. She is an audit lead for the vitreoretinal service and enjoys treating her patients and training the next generation of vitreoretinal surgeons.

What are your areas of expertise?

  • Cataract surgery
  • Retinal detachment
  • Macular hole
  • Epiretinal membrane
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Retinal vein occlusion
  • Diabetic Retinopathy

Are you involved in research projects?

I am an audit lead for the vitreoretinal department. We learn a lot from examining our outcomes and making changes to improve our practice. We publish these results to share information with our colleagues outside of Moorfields.

Are you a teaching consultant?

Yes, I enjoy teaching doctors, nurses and allied health professionals who work at Moorfields. I am co-chair of The Moorfield Academy which runs meetings where we concentrate on the non-clinical ways we can provide the best care to our patient.

Why do patients come to see you?

My patients come to me for diagnosis and management of eye diseases, especially cataract or vitreoretinal disorders. I am an approachable doctor and find it important to make sure my patient understands our plan of action and can ask questions, so they are secure in their knowledge of their condition.
