Retinal screening

What’s included?

Visual acuity test

This test assesses the clarity and sharpness of vision. At Moorfields Private it is performed using a computerised Snellen chart.

Tonometry - iCare

This test checks the pressure in your eyes (intraocular pressure) using a small handheld device called the iCare which lightly touches the cornea and rebounds back while taking  measurements of the intraocular pressure. Your eye pressure needs to be within a certain range for it be healthy. If it is too low or too high, it can be harmful to your vision.

OCT Scan

An Optical coherence tomography (OCT) scan is a non-invasive imaging test that uses light waves to take cross-sectional scans for the retina (the back of the eye).

Ultrawide Imaging (Scanning laser ophthalmoscopy)

Ultrawide field imaging captures more than 80% of the retina in a single image. It is a non-invasive imaging test that allows eye care professionals to detect diseases and monitor them in all their different stages.

Our world leading consultants are specialists in early detection and treatment of diseases and conditions associated with the retina. At your consultation, you will receive interpretation of your test results and personalised advice for your optimal eye health.

Please note that you will have dilating eye drops administered to enable some of the above listed eye tests. This means your vision may be blurry and more sensitive to light for a few hours and you will not be able to drive after your diabetic eye screening appointment. Please ask someone to come to your appointment with you or collect you afterwards. You may also like to bring your sunglasses to wear after your appointment.

A spectacle prescription is not part of retinal screening. 

How much does retinal screening cost?

Consultation and testing

Consultant fee: £250 - £500

This fee is payable to the consultant.

Hospital fee: £505

This fee is payable to the hospital. The price includes three key diagnostic tests:

  • Visual acuity and eye pressure

  • OCT

  • Optos colour photography

You can expect to be with us for up to 90 minutes, which will include both your diagnostic tests and your consultation.

If further diagnostic testing, onward referral, or treatment are required, they will be charged at an additional rate. Your consultant will discuss this with you at your consultation.
