Ms Sharon Heng

Ms Sharon Heng is a highly respected Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital and a leading specialist in medical retina diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR). Renowned for her expertise in both complex cataract surgery and premium intraocular lens implantation, she combines advanced surgical skills with a patient-centred approach to achieve exceptional clinical outcomes.

As Director of the Medical Retina Service, Ms Heng leads the development of innovative retinal care pathways, including the Medical Retina Digital Clinics, and oversees the North West London Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Programme. With more than 15 years of clinical experience and a PhD focused on preventative retinal therapies, she is committed to delivering evidence-based, personalised care while driving service innovation and excellence.

In addition to her clinical leadership, Ms Heng is an accomplished educator and researcher, contributing to national teaching programmes, mentoring the next generation of ophthalmologists, and advancing the field through clinical research. Fluent in both English and Mandarin, she provides specialist retina and cataract care to a diverse international patient population, earning a reputation for clinical excellence, compassionate care, and dedication to improving vision and quality of life.

Research interest / experience

• Retina Lasers: Ms Heng's PhD was on preventative therapy in Age Related Macular Degeneration- 'The use of the nanosecond laser technology to retard the onset of age related macular degeneration'. Her PhD is often used as a teaching guide for the pathophysiology of lasers.
• Treatment in Diabetic Macular Oedema and Age Related Macular Degeneration: Ms Heng is involved in numerous phase II/III clinical trials in medical retina diseases (AMD and Diabetic Retinopathy) including OZLASE, TENAYA, RHINE studies. These studies investigated new treatment or protocols fo Diabetic macular oedema and AMD.
• Digital Medicine: Ms Heng has keen interest in improving clinical governance within the digital medicine.  She is also chief investigator of a health inequality study to determine barriers and acceptability of digital clinics.
