The First Gentleman of Malta pledges support for research at Moorfields Eye Hospital with gift to Moorfields Eye Charity.
Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust today (Friday 16 November) welcomed a visit by The First Gentleman of Malta, Mr Edgar Preca, at its City Road hospital in London.
Mr Preca was visiting Moorfields to make a donation to Moorfields Eye Charity in support of the hospital’s innovative research programme.
The First Gentleman was greeted at the Richard Desmond Children’s Eye Centre by Tracy Luckett, director of nursing and allied health professionals at Moorfields Eye Hospital, and Robert Dufton, chief executive of Moorfields Eye Charity.
As part of the visit, the First Gentleman was taken on a tour of the City Road hospital after presenting a cheque to Moorfields Eye Charity on behalf of the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation. Mr Preca also met Andrew Scott, a consultant ophthalmic surgeon of Maltese heritage, to hear about his experiences of working at Moorfields.
Tracy Luckett, director of nursing and allied health professionals at Moorfields Eye Hospital said:
“We have a long and proud history with Malta, which grows stronger with every visit. We are very grateful for Malta’s continued support and we look forward to the First Gentleman’s next visit.”
Robert Dufton, chief executive at Moorfields Eye Charity, said:
“On behalf of everyone at Moorfields Eye Charity I thank The First Gentleman for this generous gift. Philanthropy has played a huge role throughout Moorfields’ history and donations like this not only help clinicians and researchers to carry out ground-breaking, life-changing research but they contribute to continued high levels of care.”
Moorfields has a longstanding relationship with Malta, treating over one hundred Maltese patients over the past few years. Additionally the President of Malta has made visits to Moorfields every two years since 2012 and today was The First Gentleman’s fourth visit.
